Scare tactic e-mail to purchase a web filter

I just received this e-mail from Sophos who wants me to download their white paper which tells me how to use their products to stop my students from bypassing the school's web filter. They say I need this because my students are accessing porn and "other sites" and that I've got a security risk and my school is breaking state and federal laws.

Wow, FUD much, Sophos?

I just received the same message, Arvind. I'm glad you re-posted here. Tactics like this do nothing to foster caring and open relationships between youth and adults. I'm so glad that we don't filter...I'm not saying it is perfect by any means, but at least youth and adults have open pathways to conversation and learning.
Matt, thanks for the comment. You are right on, where's the discussion about preparing kids to live and function in the world? I'm so glad we don't filter, too, and glad that we have multiple opportunities to engage with students about the consequences of their behavior. Students have to know that they are actively making choices, and that their choices have meaning.
I wish someone was scaring schools to recognize that without these conversations they're turning out students unprepared to deal with the reality of their next working/learning environments.
